Luv Micheal Foundation
-
Luv Micheal is an organisation that supports adults living with Autism.
-
It originally began with Michael, who was a young adult with autism, and he found a lot of challenges in finding meaningful work and a place to live.
-
In 2015, Mcheal and his parents, Dr. Lisa and Dr. Kessaris, launched Luv Micheal to create meaningful work opportunities through a bakery. Michael and his friends not only found jobs but also a sense of belonging.
-
→The reason they started this was due to the fact that 1 in 36 kids were being diagnosed on the spectrum today.
-
→After age 22, most state-funded services end.
-
→90% of autistic adults are unemployed or underemployed (if they are working in a job that doesn't utilize their full skills, education, or experience, or if they are working part-time when they want to work full-time)
-
→Autistic adults face a 400% higher suicide rate.
So they have 3 main objectives:
-
1. Inclusive community living: They have a residential model in Southampton, NY, which they made in 2019. It is a community where these adults can live.
-
2. Education and advocacy: The educational program engages students to volunteer to raise awareness and support for autism while earning service hours.
-
3. Workforce development has helped the autistic adults
